Talk Like a Pirate in a Job Interview

Pirate 210Aaarrggghhh! Well blow me down, it’s National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Shiver me timbers, it’s September 19th and batten down the hatches because you don’t want to wind up in Davie Jones’ Locker! Ahhh for the love of jargon. Yes, every industry niche has its own language and to facilitate understanding, one must learn that language. However, effective communication goes even deeper.

Understanding another person’s communication style and adapting yours to theirs helps facilitate conversations, projects, and teamwork. This can be especially helpful on a job interview as it can put you in control and calm nerves. Pirates’ lives were no doubt rich with stores, as is yours. Along with understanding communication styles, stories are another tool to help you win at interviewing.

From Clown to Coach

CLOWN 210🐔 Getting in a fight with a chicken is how I began my entrepreneurial career. Being a magic clown was great fun. Delivering a huge, beautifully decorated birthday cake to a child to share with his or her friends was a thrill. Entertaining the birthday child and guests with magic tricks and a puppet show gleaned squeals of delight and laughter. Ending the show in a fight with a chicken puppet and throwing feathers around brought the house down. Moving on from there, I went into doing commercials, voice overs, fashion modeling, plays, and even did a movie. It was called Something Special, but it wasn’t! 🤪

Imagination is the Mother of Invention

The Bed 2 210The title is taking license with the real phrase, “necessity is the mother of invention.” We are not big on guests and frankly have turned our guest room into an office/studio. But recently we had a visitor to stay a couple of nights and the only thing we have resembling a bed is a single size air mattress. The guest is not a nimble young person, and I knew I needed to get the mattress off the floor a bit. My imagination went into overdrive.

A Clearer Selfie

Selfie 210In the Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” two weavers formulate a ruse by deceiving the emperor into thinking they have made him a beautiful new set of clothes. Despite having on only his underwear, when the emperor looks in the mirror, he believes he sees himself in these new garments. Are our blind spots much different?

Parmigiana and Planning

EggPlant 210Every chef from here to Italy will probably laugh their aprons off at the site of all the planning, tools, and ingredients I use to make Eggplant Parmigiana. Ahhh, but the final dish is delizioso! The times I plan to make it but get caught up in my work and don’t begin the project early enough, makes this dish no fun to prepare. Couple this with the fact that I hate cooking and hate rushing makes me pazzo (crazy)! Of course, planning in general makes some people pazzo and we humans are not that good at it.🍆
